Kumbhabhishekam 8th April'17 to 10th April'17
Kumbhabhishekam for Malur Sri Balambika Temple
Kumbhabhishekam (Tamil:
குடமுழுக்கு / Kudamuzhukku
) is a ritual that is believed to homogenize,
synergize and unite the mystical powers of the pradhana deity Sri Balambika. Kumbha
means the Head and denotes the Shikhara
or Crown of the Temple (usually
in the Gopuram
) and Abhishekam
is ritual bathing.
The Kumbhabhishekam ritual begins with honouring Lord Ganesha, the Lord of
Beginnings and the Remover of Obstacles. There will also be prayers to the Earth
(bhumi puja
) for the support and blessings of the new temple. The
priests will tie a thread of blessing and protection (raksha bandhanam
)
around the wrists of the trustees, as they commit themselves to the rituals ahead.
Sometimes, grains will be planted and sprouted to assure the fruitfulness of the
rites. The main Homam takes place in a large tent erected adjacent to the new
temple. The tent becomes a yajnashala
, a “House of the Fire Offerings”, where the powerful
rites of consecration are performed with brick altars specially constructed for the
occasion. Surrounding the fire altars are hundreds of kumbhas
, which
are made of gold, silver and copper pots, sponsored by various members of the
public. They are filled with water from different rivers. Each pot is topped with
mango leaves and a coconut and each sits on a bed of rice, the picture of sheer
auspiciousness. At the brick fire altars, the participating Brahmin priests or
acharyas
(the learned ones), kindle the fires and make offerings and
libations into the fire. They chant the mantras and sacred texts that invoke the
Divine presence to the fire altar and to the pots of water to be consecrated.
It is through powerful words and mantras that the Divine is made present. The “root
mantras” (mula mantras
) are different for each deity installed in the
temple. The recitation of the mantras and the hymns required for these consecrations
often take hours. Along with the offerings of words, offerings of grain, flowers,
spices, honey, and many other substances are poured forth. All are fed into the
sacred flames along with ladles of vegetable oil, often used to replace the
traditional ghee, clarified butter. When the offerings are complete and all the
mantras have been uttered, the priests and the community stand for the
purnahuti
, the ritual of completion. Together, they recite the age-old
prayer from the Isha Upanishad, dedicating the work to the fullness, the perfection
of the eternal Brahman:
“That beyond is fullness
This here is fullness
From fullness comes fullness
Drawing out the fullness of the fullness
Fullness yet remains.”
OM shanti, shanti, shanti.
The rites of consecrating a temple include and parallel the rites of consecrating
its primary images (murtis
) of the gods. At the conclusion of the
rites, priests will circle the temple in a festive procession, bearing the largest
of the kumbha
pots on their heads. Hoisted to the temple roof, they
sprinkle the waters of consecration over the cupolas and on the eager crowd
assembled below. This procedure is known as agama mode of worship.
Benefits of performing Kumbhabhishekam
Many of you might be wondering, what are the benefits surrounding this Kumbhabhishekam and the Temple. Here is a brief list:
- It brings prosperity to every devotee visiting the temple on that day.
- It activates the potential energy within each person visiting the temple that day.
- It promotes peace and harmony within.
- It dispels fear and anger in a person.
- It removes negative karma and instills positivity in a person.
- During Kumbhabhishekam, garuda encircles the temple Vimana. It is believed that Vishnu whose vahana is garuda, supposedly visits the place as offerings are made in His name and He is the first to receive it.
- The science behind the construction of vimanas, kalasams and its Kumbhabhishekam is that, the temple architecture gives cosmic force to the main idol in the Garbhagriham. Firstly, the kalasams acts like an antenna and receives the cosmic force from space and through a subversive channel, it is linked to the main idol in the Garbhagriham. The cosmic force continuously flows through the idol and energies it. It is enhanced by the vedic chants and mantras, which energises the whole place and creates a vibration in every person visiting the temple on that day.
Agama mode of worship
The temple worship, is guided by
the Agama texts which borrow the mantras from the Vedic traditions and the
ritualistic details from Tantric traditions. Even while performing the rituals, the
Agama internalized within itself the elements of Veda and Tantra. The Agama texts
combined the rules of the Grihya sutras
with the Tantric practices and
formed its own set of rules. Furthermore, while installing the image of the deity,
the Grihya Sutras do not envisage Pranaprathistapana
ritual
(transferring life into the idol by breathing life into it); but the Agamas borrowed
this practice from the Tantra school and combined it with the Vedic ceremony of
“opening the eyes of the deity with a needle”.
While rendering worship and services to the deity, in open, the Agamas reduced the
use of Tantric mantras; and instead adopted Vedic mantras for services such as
Abhishekam
and Deepa aradanai
, though such practices were
not part of the Vedic mode of worship. The Agamas largely adopted the Vedic style
homams and Yajnas. But, they did not reject the Tantric rituals and Tantric mantras
altogether.
The Agamas in the present day find their full expression in temple worship. They form the basis for worship practices at temples today. They detail out the structure, its architecture, customs to be followed, the rituals to be performed and the festivals to be celebrated. They in fact, cover the entire gamut of activities associated with temples, its activities and its purpose. The worship in a temple has to satisfy the needs of individuals and also that of the community. Agamas accommodate collective worship along with individual worship that is characteristically private when performed at home. The worship that takes place in the sanctum and within the temple premises are important; so are the festivals and occasional processions that involve direct participation of the entire community. They complement each other. While the worship of the deity in the sanctum might be an individual’s spiritual or religious need; the festivals are the expression of a community’s joy, exuberance, devotion, pride and are also an idiom of a community’s cohesiveness.
The temple worship ritual has two other distinct
aspects: the symbolic and the actual which is secondary. The former is the inner
worship (manasa puja
or antar yajna
) of the
antaryamin
(the inner being) residing in one’s heart; and the latter is
external worship characterized by splendor, spectacle and an overflow of religious
fervor. The inner worship involving Tantric rituals that take place in the privacy
of the sanctum is more significant than the external worship. These are in a
sequence such as shudhi
(purification of elements), mudras
(assumption of appropriate and effective gestures), pranayama
(regulation of breath to enable contemplation of the divinity), dhyana
(contemplation), soham bhava
(identity of the worshipper with the
worshipped), mantra
(words to help realize the deity in the heart of a
worshipper) and mandala
(diagrams representing aspects of divinity).
External worship involves several kinds of service sequences
(Shodasha Upachara
) submitted, in full view of the worshipping
devotees, to the personified God who is revered as the most venerated guest and as
the Lord of Lords who presides over the universe (lokadyaksha
). The
services are rendered with gratitude, love and devotion to the accompaniment of
chanting of passages and mantras taken from Vedas. The worship routine is rendered
more colourful and attractive by presentations of music, dance, drama and other
performing arts. These also ensure larger participation of the enthusiastic
devotees. Thus, at the temple, both the Agama worship sequences and the symbolic
Tantric rituals take place; but each in its sphere.
The worship practices that are followed in the temples are truly an amalgam of
dissimilar streams of ideologies and practices. The rituals here are a combination
of concepts, procedures and symbolism. Each of these finds its relevance in its own
context, without conflict or contradiction.
You find that temple worship is a judicious mix (misra
) of: the Vedic
mantras and its vision of the divine. The Tantric rituals with their elaborate
symbolisms; the Agamic worship practices, attitudes and devotion; the discipline of
Yoga and its symbolic purification gestures; the exuberance and gaiety of folk
festivals, processions and celebrations in which the entire community participates
with great enthusiasm. All these elements combine harmoniously in the service of the
deity and create an integrated temple culture.

6. Sumangali Poojaii
7. Dampati Poojaii
1. Ganapathy Homam
Ganapathi homam is dedicated to Lord Ganesha to enhance family bondage, to win over enemies, to achieve the planned objectives. It has the following benefits:

Anyone having kethu dosha
or some other dosha can benefit from
Ganapathy homam. It will give them relief from their doshas. By performing this
ritual, all difficulties in their life will be removed. It is also done at the
beginning of other homams. So here, during this Kumbhabhishekam, we perform the
Ganapathy homam for removing any obstacles in the path towards performing this
Kumbhabhishekam and for health and prosperity of one and all.
2. Maha Lakshmi Homam
Sri Maha Lakshmi Homam is performed for the purpose of gaining legitimate wealth. Those who are involved in business or are facing financial problems, may perform this homam to receive the blessings and grace of Goddess Lakshmi. You must perform this homam when you are facing financial difficulties and wish to earn wealth in abundance. Even the mere recitation of these mantras, bestows prosperity. It has the following benefits:
- Alleviates financial problems
- Increases abundance
- Gets rid of loans
- Increases favourable results in contracts/business/ventures
- Enhances accumulation of wealth
3. Navagraha Homam
The Navagraha Homam is performed to remove all obstacles in life and attain
'Ayur, Arogya and Saukhyam’
. The Homam is performed after
conducting a Navagraha Poojai and nine varieties of flowers, nine cereals
(Nava Dhanya
), nine vastrams
(fabrics of different
colours), and nine types of Neivedyams
are used for the Poojai.
Each Graha is worshipped with a specific flower. Nine types of
Chamatas
(twigs) are used. This homam has the power to counter
flaws in the horoscope and enables a person to prosper in life, provided
astrological defects are the main blocks to his/her well-being. The homam is
done to appease the nine planets, i.e., the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter,
Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu, and is considered to be an effective remedy for
Navagraha Dosha
.
Bad times are attributed to the different Grahas
(planets) and
their positions in our natal chart. The Grahas can be appeased by performing the
Navagraha homam to remove Doshas or reduce malefic effects. The blessings of the
Navagraham can be obtained even if they were placed in disadvantageous positions
in the horoscope. This homam is extremely useful and beneficial, since it
strengthens the power of beneficial planets and increases their positive
influence, while pacifying maleficent planets and neutralizing their negative
influence.
4. Vaastu Shanthi
Vastu Shastra is an ancient architecture science, which is mainly used for designing a building in the right direction. Vastu Shanthi is performed for homes, offices and business firms to gain major benefits. This technique is also used in temple Vastu Shanthi homam, for improving the conditions of new buildings by removing negative energies in an effective manner. In fact, it provides methods for overcoming different types of problems to lead a successful life.

The procedure is as described below:
- First and foremost, the feet of all invited girls are washed and they are then made to sit on pedestals.
- Nalungu with turmeric powder and chunam is made and this red paste is applied on the children’s feet.
- Vadiyar performs the archana on these children.

- They are then fed with Ambal’s prasadams.
- Maha mangalarati is taken.
- The puja ends with taking blessings from these girls in the form of a pat on the back, while touching their feet.
The ritual of Kanya Poojai celebrates the Hindu philosophy which believes in the
universal creative forces to be of feminine gender. The very original force is
Mahamaya
, whose inspiration created the Gods and the rest of the
cosmos. Goddess Durga and all her forms are believed to be the manifestations of
the same inspiration, Mahamaya.
6. Sumangali Poojaii
Lalitha Sahasranamam was composed by 8 Vaag Devis (Vaag Devathas
)
upon the command of Devi Sri Lalitha. The 8 vaag devis are -
Vasini, Kameshwari, Aruna, Vimala, Jayinee, Modhinee, Sarveshwari, Koulini
.
This depicts the truth, "One can worship Lalitha
only if she wishes us to do so".
The Sahasranamam appears as a dialogue between Lord Hayagriva and Sage Agasthya
and explains the birth of Sri Lalitha MahaTripuraSundari from the Holy fire,
raised for the abolition of Bandasura upon the advice of Saint Narada. The
Sahasranamam explains the life and also the Roopa Lavanyam
(The
beauty) of the Goddess as referred below,
Sumangali Sukha kari Suveshadya Suvasini
Suvasinyarchana
preetha shobhana Shuddha manasa
Sumangali She Who Is Eternally Auspicious
Sukha Kari She Who Gives Happiness
Suvesh-adhya She Who Is Very Attractive In Her Beautiful Rich Garments And Ornaments
Suvasini She Who Is Ever Auspiciously Married
Suva-sinyar-chana Prita She Who Is Pleased By The Worship Performed By Married Women
Shobhana She Who Is Always Radiant
Shuddha Manasa She Who Is Of Pure Mind; One Who Purifies The Mind Of Her Worshippers
For this reason, Suhasini/Sumangali Poojaii is performed in
every temple and in every home.
During the Poojaii:
- First and foremost, the feet of all invited sumangalis are washed and they are then made to sit on pedestals.
- Nalungu with turmeric powder and chunam is made and this red paste is applied on the feet.
- Vadiyar performs the archana on these sumangalis.

- The kalasams are unique and made specifically for Kumbhabhishekam, so having it in your home after the Poojai, brings positivity into your homes.
- Kalasams come in different shapes and sizes, and in different materials like silver, gold coated and copper.
Homam & Poojai Sponsors
- Homams and Poojais have their own benefits, which I have listed earlier.
- The sponsors for a particular homam will be asked to sit for sankalpam and perform the Poojai for the deity themselves, with the help of a vadiyar.
- Performing these homams in the temple environment is an experience in itself, unlike the ones we perform at home, because along with these homams, the temple is sanctified completely and filled with positive energy and Ambal’s grace and mercy. So it is definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity.
- Special mention has to be made here about the different kalam Poojais. This is unique for Kumbhabhishekam, because Ambal is invited to preside over the Poojais and the different sashodasa upacharas are performed.
Vigrahams & Peedams
Vigrahams of Bala are being released for the first time by BDS. These vigrahams are to be placed along with the kalasams and these are being introduced to mark the 2017 Kumbhabhishekam process. Devotees are encouraged to buy them and this does not need prana prathistai, as they are blessed by Ambal during the 4 kala Poojais. So, it is very special and devotees should take this opportunity to buy them.
Vastrams, Flowers & Poojai items
Every drop of water makes the mighty oceans, so every
contribution towards fulfilling this magnificent project is
a dream come true for any Bala devotee.
Purchasing Bala’s merchandise helps this organization to
celebrate Bala’s love and magnanimity, like never
experienced before.
